Ferando José Torres Sanz

Fernando José Torres Sanz (born 20 March 1984), nicknamed El Niño (The Kid in Spanish), is a Spanish footballer who plays for Italian club Milan on loan from Chelse and the Spain national team as a striker.

Torres started his career with Atlético Madrid, progressing through their youth system. He made his first team debut in 2001 and finished his career with the club having scored 75 goals in 174 La Liga appearances. Prior to his La Liga debut, Torres played two seasons in the Segunda División, making 40 appearances and scoring seven goals. He joined Liverpool in 2007, after signing for a club record transfer fee. He marked his first season at Anfield by being Liverpool's first player, since Robbie Fowler in 1995–96, to score more than 20 league goals in a season. Torres became the fastest player in Liverpool history to score 50 league goals after scoring against Aston Villa in December 2009.

He is also a Spanish international and made his debut for the country against Portugal in 2003. He has since participated in four major tournaments, UEFA Euro 2004, the 2006 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He did not score a goal at UEFA Euro 2004, but he scored three at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Torres scored twice at UEFA Euro 2008, which included the winning goal for Spain in their 1–0 win over Germany in the Final. He won the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Spain, despite himself not scoring any goals.

Career

Born in Fuenlabrada, Community of Madrid, Torres became interested in football as a child and joined his first team, Parque 84, at the age of five. His father José worked during Torres' childhood, and his mother Flori traveled daily with him to training sessions. His grandfather was not a passionate football fan, but took pride in being an Atlético Madrid supporter, and Torres inherited his love for the club.

Torres started playing football as a goalkeeper, the position his brother played in. When he was seven years old, however, he started playing regularly as a striker in an indoor league for the neighborhood club, Mario's Holland, using the characters from the anime Captain Tsubasa as inspiration. Three years later, aged 10, he progressed to an 11-side team, Rayo 13. He scored 55 goals in a season and was one of three Rayo 13 players to earn a trial with Atlético. He impressed the scouts and joined the club's youth system at the age of 11 in 1995.

Atlético Madrid

After progressing through the ranks, Torres won his first important youth title in 1998. Atlético sent an under-15 team to compete in the Nike Cup, in Spain and Europe, to play against youth teams from other clubs; Atlético won the tournament. He was later voted the best player in Europe for the age group. In 1999, at the age of 15, Torres signed his first professional contract with Atlético. He spent his first year playing in the youth team and moved onto the participating in the Honor Division when he was 16. The 2000–01 season had started badly, as Torres suffered from a cracked shinbone which kept him out until December. Torres trained with the first team to get prepared for pre-season, but eventually made his debut for the team on 27 May 2001, at Vicente Calderón, against CD Leganés. A week later, he scored his first goal for the club against Albacete Balompié and the season finished with Atlético narrowly missing out on promotion to La Liga.


Torres arguing with the referee during a match with Atlético MadridAtlético were promoted to La Liga at the end of the 2001–02 season, although Torres did not perform well in the season, as he netted only six times in 36 appearances in the Segunda División. Torres' first season in La Liga, 2002–03, was better, however, as he scored 13 goals in 29 appearances, with Atlético finishing in 11th place. In the 2003–04 season, his second in La Liga, Torres made further strides, scoring 19 league goals in 35 appearances, meaning he finished as joint third highest scorer in the league. At the age of 19, Torres was named Atlético's captain. Atlético narrowly missed out on qualification for the UEFA Cup, but by finishing in seventh place in the 2003–04 season, they qualified for the 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup, giving Torres a first taste of a competition at the European level. He scored two goals in the two fourth round matches against OFK Beograd, with one coming in each leg. Atlético reached the Final, but lost 3–1 on a penalty shootout to Villarreal CF following a 2–2 draw on aggregate. FA Premier League champions Chelsea were believed to be interested in signing Torres in 2005, but Atlético president Enrique Cerezo said that they had "no chance" of signing him. Cerezo later said in January 2006 that the club were willing to listen to offers for Torres, and Torres claimed Newcastle United had made a bid to sign him in March.

He stated after the 2006 FIFA World Cup that he had turned down an offer to join Chelsea at the end of the 2005–06 season. Torres scored 14 league goals in the 2006–07 season. The English media reported that he was the main transfer target of Liverpool, but Cerezo stated "We've received no offer from Liverpool or any other club or player". However, a few days later, new reports suggested Atlético had agreed a deal with Liverpool for Torres; the fee was rumored to be £25 million with Luis García moving to Atletico in a separate transfer deal. On 30 June, Atlético announced a deal to sign Diego Forlán from Villarreal, in what was seen as a move to replace Torres before his departure became official. On 2 July, it was reported that Torres had cut short a vacation to fly back to Madrid to finalise the move to Liverpool. The following day, Torres passed a medical for Liverpool's Melwood training ground. He held a press conference in Madrid on 4 July to bid farewell to the Atlético fans, before completing his move to Liverpool on a six-year contract. The transfer fee was the highest in Liverpool's history. In March 2008, manager Rafael Benítez stated in an interview with The Times that Torres was acquired for around £20 million, although this figure takes into account García's move to Atlético.

Liverpool

2007-2008 Season

Torres made his competitive debut for Liverpool against Aston Villa in a 2–1 win on 11 August 2007. He made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League four days later in a 1–0 victory over Toulouse, after coming on as a 79th minute substitute. His first Premier League goal came on his Anfield debut on 19 August, in the 16th minute in a 1–1 draw against Chelsea. His first hat-trick came in a 4–2 victory over Reading in the League Cup in September, with all of his goals coming in the second half. His first goals in the Champions League came on his third appearance in the competition as Liverpool beat Porto 4–1, as he scored twice.

He was named Premier League Player of the Month for February, during which he scored four goals in two league appearances, including a hat-trick against Middlesbrough on 23 February 2008. This hat-trick and another in a 4–0 victory over West Ham United on 5 March 2008 meant he became the first Liverpool player since Jack Balmer in November 1946 to score a hat-trick in successive home matches. Later in March, after he scored a 47th minute header against Reading at Anfield, becoming the first Liverpool player since Robbie Fowler in the 1995–96 season campaign to score 20 league goals in a season. In April, he scored another Champions League goal, this time against Arsenal in the quarter-final second leg, as Liverpool advanced to the semi-final. This goal took him onto 29 goals for the 2007–08 season in all competitions, eclipsing Liverpool favourite Michael Owen's personal record for goals in a season. On 11 April 2008, it was announced Torres had made a six man shortlist for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award, which was eventually won by Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United. The Spanish international was also nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award, which was won by Cesc Fàbregas of Arsenal and was named in the PFA Team of the Year. In May, he finished second to Ronaldo for the FWA Footballer of the Year award.

On 4 May 2008, Torres scored a 57th minute winner against Manchester City, which equalled the consecutive Anfield league goal record of eight games set by Roger Hunt. After scoring his 24th league goal in the final game of the season, a 2–0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, he set a new record for the most prolific foreign goal scorer ever in a debut season in England, eclipsing Ruud van Nistelrooy's 23 goals. He ended the season in joint second place with Emmanuel Adebayor in the race for the Premier League golden boot. Torres was subject to media speculation that Chelsea were willing pay £50 million to sign him but Torres responded by saying it would be "many years" before he left Liverpool. Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks also negated the idea of a transfer, saying he would not allow Torres to leave the club at any price.

2008-2009 Season

Torres made a promising start to the 2008–09 Premier League season, scoring the only goal in a 1–0 away win against Sunderland. He suffered what was later confirmed as a hamstring tear in a 0–0 draw against Aston Villa, which would keep him out for two to three weeks. Torres made his return in a 2–1 victory against Marseille in the Champions League and went on to score two goals in the Merseyside derby against Everton on 27 September to give Liverpool a 2–0 win. He followed this up with another two goals the following weekend against Manchester City in a 3–2 win away at the City of Manchester Stadium as Liverpool came back from a two goal deficit. The first of these was the thousandth Liverpool goal to be scored in the Premier League. Torres picked up a hamstring injury during a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier, meaning he was likely to miss three games for Liverpool. On 22 October, Liverpool played Torres' former club Atlético in the Champions League at the Vicente Calderón, but his injury meant he missed out on the game. The Atlético president, Enrique Cerezo, had given him a VIP invitation to watch the game, but he declined this to recover his rehabilitation from injury in Merseyside. He was named in the FIFPro World XI team for the 2007–08 season on 27 October.[55]

He said he would be interested in returning to former club Atlético eventually, saying "I don't know if I will retire there, but I would like to go back and finish some things that are left to do." He was ruled out of action for two to three weeks following Liverpool's 1–0 victory over Marseille in the Champions League in November, where he picked up a hamstring strain, which was later extended to at least four weeks by specialists. He was named on the shortlist for the FIFA World Player of the Year award in December, and eventually came in third place behind Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Torres returned to action on 3 January 2009 as a substitute with a goal in the 2–0 win over Preston North End; his first in the FA Cup. He scored two late goals for Liverpool to secure a 2–0 victory over Chelsea on 1 February. Despite having spent a year and a half at the club, Torres was chosen as number 50 in The Times's list of "The 50 greatest Liverpool players", reinforcing the impact he had made at Liverpool in such a short period of time.

Torres faced his old rivals Real Madrid on 10 March in the Champions League last 16 and due to an ankle injury, he had a painkilling injecting before the game to enable him to play. He scored the first goal of the game, which ended as a 4–0 victory, meaning Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals 5–0 on aggregate. Four days later he lined up against Manchester United at Old Trafford and he scored the equaliser in a game that finished as a 4–1 victory. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the second season running in April 2009. Torres scored his 50th goal for Liverpool on 24 May against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the 2008–09 season, which was his 84th appearance.

2009-2010 Season

Following the end of the season, he agreed a new contract with Liverpool, which he signed on 14 August. By signing this contract, Liverpool increased his wage to £110,000 a week and included the option of a one-year extension after its expiry in 2013. Torres scored two goals in a 3–2 win over West Ham United on 19 September 2009, a result that took Liverpool to third in the Premier League. A week later he scored his first hat-trick of the 2009–10 Premier League season in a 6–1 victory over Hull City at Anfield. He was named Premier League Player of the Month for September, after scoring five goals during the month and becoming the Premier League's top goalscorer. On 25 October, he scored the first goal in a 2–0 victory for Liverpool over Manchester United, after which Benítez praised Torres' performance, saying "We were waiting for that final pass. When it came we knew he would score." Torres was named in the FIFPro World XI for the second successive season in December. His stoppage-time winning goal against Aston Villa on 29 December 2009 made him the fastest Liverpool player ever to score 50 league goals. He was substituted on 65 minutes in a 1–1 draw with Birmingham City on 4 April 2010, which Benítez justified by saying Torres was "exhausted". It was announced on 18 April that Torres would miss the rest of the season to undergo knee surgery. This meant that Torres finished the season with 22 goals in 32 games in all competitions.

2010-2011 Season

Following his appointment as Liverpool manager, Roy Hodgson stated Torres would not be sold by the club, saying "He is not for sale and we don't welcome any offers for him. We want to keep him." Hodgson dismissed reports Torres was set to leave Liverpool by saying "He has told us that he is looking forward to Monday, to getting back to work and looking forward to playing for Liverpool next season. That is what I know so other reports, I would suggest, are erroneous." Torres stated his commitment to Liverpool on 3 August, saying "My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed." He made his first appearance of the 2010–11 season in the opening game, a 1–1 draw with Arsenal on 14 August, entering the game as a substitute in the 74th minute. He scored his first goal of the season with the winner in a 1–0 victory over West Brom on 29 August,which was his 50th goal in all competitions to be scored at Anfield.Torres scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Blackburn Rovers on 24 October, which was his first goal since August.He followed this up by scoring both goals in Liverpool's 2–0 win over Chelsea on 7 November.On 1 January 2011, Torres scored the equaliser in a 2–1 win against Bolton Wanderers.

Chelsea

On 27 January 2011, Torres was the subject of a transfer bid from Chelsea which was rejected by Liverpool. He subsequently handed in an official transfer request to Liverpool the next day, which was rejected. On 31 January it was announced Liverpool had accepted a £50 million bid from Chelsea and Torres officially became a Chelsea player, signing a five-and-a-half year contract.
One day later, Torres was presented in the club with number 9 shirt and he said: "It is not perfect but if I have the chance to play, I will do my best and hopefully I can score. I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level. I will never say anything bad about Liverpool. I have been very happy there but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea. I am joining with big names like Terry, Lampard, Drogba and Anelka and I can be part of this great team. "I have good memories and bad memories of games against Chelsea. All the goals are good memories because all of them are special. If they are happy as well because I am not going to score any more against them then it is good."
He made his debut on 6 February in a 1–0 defeat to former club Liverpool. On 23 April, Torres scored his first goal for Chelsea against West Ham United in a 3–0 victory, which ended a run of 903 minutes of football without a goal.

2011-2012 Season

Torres got the new season underway with a Man of the Match performance away against Stoke, the match ended 0-0.
Torres got the 2011–12 season underway in Chelsea's 0–0 draw away against Stoke City, in which his "link-up play was sharp, plus he was willing to make intelligent runs into space to receive the ball". He scored his second goal at Chelsea, and his first of the season, on 18 September, during an away game against Manchester United, which was the side's only goal in a 3–1 defeat. He scored his second goal of the season against Swansea City in a 4–1 victory. However, 10 minutes after his goal, a two-footed challenge on Mark Gower resulted in his first red card in English football and a three-match domestic suspension. On 19 October, Torres scored two goals in a 5–0 victory against Genk in the Champions League, his first in Europe since the quarter-final of the 2008–09 Champions League with his old club Liverpool, against Chelsea. His next Chelsea goals came after scoring twice and also assisting two others against Championship side Leicester City in an FA Cup quarter-final on 18 March 2012, ending a goal drought that stretched 24 games.On 31 March 2012, Torres scored his first Premier League goal since 24 September 2011 against Aston Villa in a 4–2 away win. Torres came on as a substitute for Didier Drogba on 24 April 2012 to score a last-minute goal against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final, which gave Chelsea a 2–2 draw, and also eliminated Barcelona from the tournament, as Chelsea won 3–2 on aggregate. For the first time, Torres won the UEFA Champions League after defeating Bayern Muenchen in the final through a penalty shoot-out, Torres appeared in the game as a second half substitute. He scored the first hat-trick of his Chelsea career in a 6–1 win against Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge on 29 April. Torres came on in the second half of the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, directly after Bayern's opening goal, and was heavily involved with Didier Drogba's equalizer, earning the corner kick from which the Ivorian scored to bring the game into extra time.

2012-2013 Season

Torres started the 2012–13 season in the 2012 FA Community Shield against Manchester City at Villa Park, where he scored the opening goal, as Chelsea lost 3–2. On 19 August 2012, he appeared in Chelsea's first league match in a 2–0 away win against Wigan Athletic. Torres scored his first goal of the season in Chelsea's next match on 22 August 2012, a 4–2 home win against Reading, scoring the third goal to give his side the lead. He also scored against Newcastle United, Arsenal and Norwich City as Chelsea topped the table in the early weeks of the season.

Torres was sent off for receiving two yellow cards against Manchester United on 28 October 2012, the second for diving, leaving Chelsea with nine men after teammate Branislav Ivanović was also sent off; the team went on to lose 3–2. Torres scored his first goal in the Champions League for the season after deflecting Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov's clearance into goal, as Chelsea needed a 94th minute winner from Victor Moses to secure a 3–2 victory on 7 November 2012. On 21 November 2012, Roberto Di Matteo was replaced as Chelsea manager by Rafael Benítez, who had previously coached Torres at Liverpool. It was reported that one reason for Benítez's appointment was to help Torres return to his best form.

Torres ended a goal drought that stretched over 11 hours of game time with two goals in Chelsea's 6–1 defeat of Nordsjælland in the Champions League on 5 December 2012. Three days later he scored another two goals, ending a run of eight Premier League games without a goal, as Chelsea defeated Sunderland 3–1. He then scored in Chelsea's 2012 FIFA Club World Cup semi-final 3–1 win against Monterrey of the Mexican Liga MX on 13 December 2012, before playing in the 1–0 defeat to Brazilian Série A side Corinthians in the final three days later.

On 14 March 2013, Torres scored the third goal as Chelsea defeated Steaua București 3–1 to advance 3–2 on aggregate to the quarter-final of the Europa League. With this goal, Torres became the first player to score in seven different competitions in one season. In April 2013, Torres acknowledged his struggles at Chelsea, saying: "I want to do the things I used to do. I did them at Atlético, I did them at Liverpool, but I am not doing them at Chelsea", but he vowed to "try his heart out" to regain his best form. He scored twice against Rubin Kazan in the 3–1 win in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final on 4 April 2013, before scoring again in the second leg 3–2 defeat, with Chelsea progressing to the semi-final 5–4 on aggregate. Torres scored the opening goal in Chelsea's 2–1 triumph over Benfica in the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final on 15 May 2013. During the final game of the season, a 2–1 home win over Everton, he scored his first league goal of 2013, and finished the season with 22 goals in 64 games.

2013-2014 Season

Torres was selected to start by Chelsea's new manager José Mourinho against Hull City on the opening day of the 2013–14 season, where he won a fifth minute penalty kick. He scored his first goal of the season in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup against Bayern Munich. On 28 September 2013, he was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in Chelsea's 1–1 Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Torres made his 100th start for Chelsea against Schalke 04 in a Champions League match on 22 October 2013 and marked the occasion by scoring two goals in a 3–0 win. His first Premier League goal of the season came on 27 October as he scored the winning goal in the 90th minute over title challengers Manchester City, while also providing the assist for André Schürrle's opener.

Milan

On 29 August 2014, Torres joined Italian giants Milan on a two-year loan deal.

Intenational Career

In February 2001, Torres won the Algarve Tournament with the Spain national under-16 team. The under-16s took part in the 2001 UEFA European Under-16 Football Championship in May, which they also won, with Torres scoring the only goal in the Final, as well as finishing as the tournament's leading scorer, and was also named the player of the tournament. In September 2001, Torres represented the under-17 team at the 2001 FIFA Under-17 World Championship, but the team failed to progress through the group stage. In July 2002, he won the 2002 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship with the under-19 team and was again the only goalscorer in the Final. Also, he finished as top scorer and was named player of the tournament.

His first goal for Spain came against Italy on 28 April 2004. He was selected for the Spanish squad for UEFA Euro 2004. After appearing as a late substitute in Spain's first two group games, he started for the deciding game against Portugal. Spain were losing 1–0 and, towards the end of the game, he hit the post.

He scored seven goals in 11 appearances in qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, making him Spain's top scorer for qualification, including a vital two goals against Belgium and his first international hat-trick against San Marino. At his first ever appearance in a FIFA World Cup finals at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, Torres scored the final goal in a 4–0 victory over Ukraine with a volley. In the second group match, Torres scored twice against Tunisia, first in the 76th minute to take Spain 2–1 into the lead, and then again from a penalty kick in the 90th. With three goals, he finished the tournament as Spain's top scorer along with fellow striker David Villa.

He was called up for Spain's UEFA Euro 2008 squad, where he set up Villa to score Spain's first goal of the tournament in the first game in the group stage against Russia. Torres came under criticism for apparently refusing to shake the hand of Spanish manager, Luis Aragonés, after being substituted. He subsequently denied being angry with the coaching, saying that he was actually "irritated with himself". He scored his first goal of the tournament in Spain's next game, a 2–1 win over Sweden. Torres scored the winner and was named the man of the match in the Final against Germany in a 1–0 victory. He said "It's just a dream come true. This is my first title and I hope it's the first of many. Victory in a Euro, it is almost as big as a World Cup. We are used to watching finals on television, but today we were here and we won. My job is to score goals. I want to win more titles and be the most important player in Europe and the world." He was later named as a striker along with his striking partner Villa in the Team of the Tournament.

Torres made his 60th appearance for Spain in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification victory over Turkey on 28 March 2009, becoming the youngest player to reach this milestone. He was named in Spain's team for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in June. He scored his second hat-trick for Spain after 17 minutes into a Confederations Cup game against New Zealand on 14 June, thus recording the fastest hat-trick by a player for Spain. He played for Spain as they were defeated 2–0 by the United States in the semi-final, as well as the third-place play-off, which Spain won 3–2 against South Africa after extra time.

Torres was selected for Spain's 2010 FIFA World Cup squad and came on as a substitute on 61 minutes in their opening game, a 1–0 defeat to Switzerland. He started the next two games against Honduras and Chile and although his performances in the group stage were described as below-par, he received backing from manager Vicente del Bosque. Torres came on as a substitute on 105 minutes in the Final as Spain won the FIFA World Cup for the first time following a 1–0 victory over the Netherlands on 11 July 2010.

Torres was selected in Del Bosque's UEFA Euro 2012 squad. In his first start of the tournament he netted two goals as Spain defeated the Republic of Ireland 4–0 to knock them out of the tournament. In the Final of Euro 2012, Torres came on as a substitute against Italy, scoring one goal and assisting another, as Spain won a second consecutive Euopean Champiosnship with a 4–0 victory. This secured him the Golden Boot for the tournament with three goals and one assist, having played fewer minutes than Mario Gómez, who also had three goals and one assist.

Torres won his 100th cap against Saudi Arabia on 7 September 2012, making him the sixth highest capped player for Spain, and started the game as captain in Iker Casillas' absence. He became the first person in history to score four goals in one game in a FIFA Confederations Cup match during a 10–0 win over Tahiti on 20 June 2013 in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. Torres also became the first player to score two hat-tricks in the FIFA Confederations Cup, and with five goals and one assist won the tournament's Golden Shoe, ahead of Fred having played fewer minutes.

In his first international for 11 months, Torres scored a penalty in a World Cup warm-up match against Bolivia on 30 May 2014. The day after, he was named in Spain's final squad for the tournament, ahead of Álvaro Negredo and Fernando Llorente. After substitute appearances in the team's opening two matches, Torres was named in the starting line-up for the third group match with the team's elimination already confirmed. He scored Spain's second goal in a 3–0 defeat of Australia in Curitiba.

Personal Life

Torres' parents are José and Flori, and he has two older siblings, Israel (born 1977) and Maria Paz (born 1976). He married Olalla Domínguez Liste, with whom he had been in a relationship since 2001, on 27 May 2009 in a private ceremony with just two guests at the local town hall in El Escorial, Madrid. They had been an item for eight years and are thought to have met in the Galician seaside town of Estorde, where Torres would go on family holidays each year to escape the Spanish capital. The couple have two children, a daughter, Nora, born on 8 July 2009 at the Hospital La Rosaleda, in Santiago de Compostela, and a son, born on 6 December 2010 at Liverpool Women's Hospital, with Torres missing the Aston Villa game at Anfield.

In 2009, it was reported that Torres has a personal fortune of £14 million. He features in the video for "Ya Nada Volverá A Ser Como Antes" by Spanish pop rock group El Canto del Loco, whose singer, Dani Martín, shares a strong friendship with the footballer. He makes a cameo appearance in the 2005 comedy film Torrente 3: El protector. In 2009, he released an autobiography entitled Torres: El Niño: My Story.

Fernando José Torres Sanz

Fernando José Torres Sanz (n. 20 de marzo de 1984, Fuenlabrada, Madrid, España), más conocido como Fernando Torres o «El Niño» en España, y «The Kid» en Inglaterra, es un futbolista español. Se desempeña como delantero y su actual club es el AC Milan de la Serie A Italiana.

Inició su carrera en las categorías inferiores del Atlético de Madrid. En 2001 debutó con el primer equipo, cuando este se encontraba jugando en la Segunda Division, donde llego a marcar 7 tantos en 40 encuentros y lograr el ascenso a la Primera Division de España.

En la liga marcó 75 tantos en 174 encuentros. El Liverpool lo fichó en 2007, convirtiéndole en el futbolista más caro en llegar al equipo británico. En la temporada 2007/08 se convirtió en el único futbolista del Liverpool - desde Robbie Fowler (1995/6) - en marcar más de veinte tantos en una temporada.

En 2003 debutó como internacional absoluto en un enfrentamiento entre España y Portugal que concluyó 0 - 3. Ha defendido la elástica nacional en tres importantes competiciones: la Eurocopa 2004, donde no marcó ningún tanto; la Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2006, donde marcó tres tantos;la Eurocopa 2008, donde anotó dos tantos, incluyendo el de la victoria en la final ante Alemania. y la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2010, en la que a pesar de jugar todos los partidos no consiguió anotar ningún tanto la Selección de fútbol de España y donde obtuvo su primer título mundial.

Trayectoria

Torres nació en Fuenlabrada (Madrid) el 20 de marzo de 1984. A la edad de cinco años se unió al club de fútbol «Parque 84». En sus inicios, su madre le acompañaba diariamente a los entrenamientos. Por intercesión de su abuelo, que era aficionado rojiblanco, se hizo seguidor del Atlético de Madrid.

Comenzó desempeñándose como cancerbero, como su hermano. Con siete años se convirtió en delantero y comenzó a competir regularmente en un equipo de fútbol sala de su barrio, el «Mario's Holanda». Torres afirma que en esta etapa de su carrera los personajes de la serie de anime «Oliver y Benji» le sirvieron de inspiración. Tres años más tarde se incorporó a un equipo de fútbol once llamado «Rayo 13». A los tres mejores de la temporada les ofrecían la oportunidad de hacer una demostración ante el Atlético. Ese año anotó 55 tantos, convirtiéndose en uno de los tres niños seleccionados. Impresionó a los ojeadores y se unió al club en 1995.

Atlético de Madrid

Tras estar en las categorias inferiores del club, logró su primer título importante como juvenil en 1998. El Atlético de Madrid envió un equipo sub-15 a competir en la Nike Cup - disputada en España y en Europa - contra combinados de otros clubs, con el que se impuso en el torneo. Durante la competición, empezó a considerársele como uno de los más completos futbolistas europeos de su edad. Un año más tarde firmó un contrato profesional con el Atlético, y, tras comenzar la temporada en la División de Honor Juvenil, la concluyó en Segunda División. Comenzó la temporada aquejado de una lesión en la rodilla izquierda, no incorporándose hasta diciembre. El 27 de mayo de 2001 debutó con el equipo en el Vicente Calderon ante el CD Leganés. Una semana más tarde marcó su primer tanto contra el Albacete. Al término del año el equipo quedó en cuarto lugar.

En la temporada 2001/02, el equipo se clasifica en primera posición, logrando así el campeonato y el ascenso a la Primera División de España; Torres termino la temporada con 6 tantos en 36 apariciones. En la temporada 2002/03 Torres tuvo un mayor rendimiento y marcó 12 tantos en 29 apariciones; contribuyendo así a que el Atlético alcanzará la undécima plaza. En la temporada 2003/04 formó una delantera temible con el delantero heleno Demis Nikolaidis. Torres anotó 19 tantos en 35 partidos, con lo que se convirtió en el tercer máximo anotador del campeonato. Con sólo 19 años fue nombrado capitán del equipo. El Atlético no alcanzó la clasificicación para la Copa de la UEFA, y tuvo que conformarse con disputar la Copa Intertoto de la UEFA, lo que dio al delantero madrileño la oportunidad de estar en una competición europea. Anotó dos tantos en las semifinales contra el OFK Beograd que concluyeron con un global de 1-5 a favor de los madrileños. Alcanzada la final, los rojiblancos cayeron en los penaltis ante el Villarreal CF. Tras concluir la temporada el Chelsea reveló su interés en el ariete de Fuenlabrada, mas Enrique Cerezo, máximo mandatario del equipo, afirmó que no tenían intención de traspasarle. En enero de 2006 Cerezo cambió de opinión y dijo que el club escucharía ofertas por el futbolista; el mismo Torres afirmó que en marzo le llegó una oferta del Newcastle United.

En 2006 fue convocado con la selección española, con la que disputó el Mundial. Tras ser eliminados, reveló que había rechazado una oferta del Chelsea al término de la temporada 2005–06. En la temporada 2006/07 anotó catorce tantos, lo que no evitó que volviera a especularse acerca de su futuro al fracasar el equipo en su objetivo de alcanzar la clasificación para la UEFA. Los medios informativos británicos afirmaron que el futbolista interesaba mucho al Liverpool; no obstante, Cerezo afirmó que no habían recibido ninguna oferta. Unos días más tarde los medios desmintieron al mandatario rojiblanco revelando que ambas entidades habían llegado a un acuerdo por Torres. Se rumoreaba que el montante de la operación alcanzaba 25 millones de libras, además del traspaso de Luis García en una operación independiente. Poco después el Atlético anunció el fichaje de Diego Forlán, procedente del Villarreal, lo que los medios consideraron como un movimiento destinado a reemplazar al canterano antes de que el anuncio del traspaso se hiciera oficial. El 2 de julio Torres retornó de sus vacaciones a la capital, donde cerró las operaciones con la entidad británica en un contrato que lo vinculaba al equipo inglés durante seis años. Un día mas tarde pasó el reconocimiento médico con el Liverpool. Ofreció una rueda de prensa para despedirse de los aficionados antes de marcharse con su nuevo club. El traspaso constituyó la operación económica más cara de la historia del club inglés. El entrenador del Liverpool - Rafael Benítez - desveló en una entrevista concedida a The Times que el coste del traspaso ascendía a 20 millones de libras, aunque en el montante de la operación estaba incluido el traspaso de Luis García.

Liverpool FC

2007-2008

Ese verano debutó con el Liverpool en un amistoso ante el Werder Bremen, que concluyó con un marcador de 3-2 a favor de los reds. En otro amistoso que enfrentaba al equipo ingles con el New Team asiático anotó su primer tanto con el club.


Torres durante un encuentro entre el Liverpool y el Middlesbrough (23 de febrero de 2008). En dicho encuentro anotó un «hat-trick».Debutó oficialmente en la Premier ante el Aston Villa, en un ecuentro que terminó en victoria del Liverpool (2-1). Jugó su primer partido de Champions cuatro días después, en la victoria de su equipo ante el Toulouse FC (0-1). Anotó su primer tanto en la Premier ante el Chelsea en su debut en Anfield (1-1). En septiembre anotó un hat-trick ante el Reading en la League Cup. Marcó sus primeros dos tantos en Champions ante el FC Porto (4-1).

Fue nombrado futbolista del mes de la Premier en febrero, cuado anotó cuatro tantos en dos encuentros, incluyendo un hat-trick ante el Middlesbrough. Éste y otro hat-trick, anotado en la victoria de los reds (4-0) ante el West Ham United le convirtieron en el único futbolista del Liverpool desde Jack Balmer en 1946 en marcar tres tantos en dos encuentros cosecutivos como local. En marzo, después de anotar de cabeza ante el Reading en Anfield, se convirtió en el único futbolista desde Robbie Fowler (1995/96) en marcar más de 20 tantos en una temporada. En abril marcó un tanto en la Champions ante el Arsenal, contribuyendo a que su equipo accediera a las semifinales de la competición. Con este tanto Torres anotaba su número veintinueve en todas las competiciones, rebasando de ese modo la marca de Michael Owen. El 11 de abril de 2008 fue nominado al Premio PFA, concedido al futbolista del año de la Premier. Dicho reconocimiento acabó llevándoselo Cristiano Ronaldo, futbolista del Manchester United. También fue nominado al PFA Young Player of the Year - concedido al mejor jugador joven - que se llevó el futbolista del Arsenal Cesc Fàbregas. Asimismo, se le encuadró dentro del once ideal de la Premier. En mayo quedó detrás de Cristiano Ronaldo en las votaciones del FWA Footballer of the Year.


Torres durante la victoria del Liverpool (3-2) ante el Manchester City.El 4 de mayo de 2008 anotó el tanto de la victoria de su equipo ante el Manchester City (1-0), con lo que alcanzaba el récord que había establecido Roger Hunt de marcar de manera consecutiva en ocho encuentros disputados en Anfield. Tras anotar otro tanto ante el Tottenham Hotspur (2-0) se convirtió máximo anotador extranjero en su temporada como debutante desde Van Nistelrooy Finalizó la temporada compartiendo la segunda plaza de la lista de máximos anotadores con Emmanuel Adebayor - ambos con 24 tantos. Ese verano los medios británicos afirmaron que el Chelsea estaba dispuesto a ofrecer 50 millones de libras al Liverpool a fin de hacerse con los servicios del delantero madrileño, mas éste dijo que quería quedarse muchos años en su equipo. Tom Hicks - co-propietario del equipo - afirmó que no estaba dispuesto a desprenderse del futbolista español.

2008-2009

Tras un excelente arranque de temporada anotando el único tanto del de su equipo ante el Sunderland (1-0), sufrió una lesión en los isquiotibiales en el encuentro ante el Aston Villa (0-0), que lo mantuvo apartado tres semanas. Torres volvió en el encuentro de Champions ante el Olympique de Marsella - en el que se impuso su equipo (2-1) - y anotó de nuevo ante el Everton (2-0). Continuó con su racha tras anotar dos tantos en la victoria (3-2) a domicilio de su equipo ante el Manchester City, al que tuvo que remontar un 2-0 en contra. El primero de estos dos tantos era el milésimo que marcaba el Liverpool en la Premier League. Se lesionó en el muslo durante un encuentro clasificatorio para el Mundial 2010, lo que le hizo estar ausente en tres encuentros de su equipo. El 22 de octubre el Liverpool disputó un encuentro ante su ex-equipo el Atlético de Madrid en Champions; en el cual no estuvo Torres a causa de su lesión. Enrique Cerezo le cedió una entrada VIP que Torres rechazó, ya que quería continuar con su recuperación. El 27 de octubre fue seleccionado dentro de la alineación ideal de la temporada 2007/08 de la FIFPro.

Torres volvió a la competición en la victoria de su equipo ante el West Bromwich Albion (3-0). Durante una entrevista afirmó que le encantaría retornar al Atlético con el tiempo - «no sé si me retirare allí, pero me gustaría volver y terminar algunas cosas que quedaron por hacer». En la victoria de su equipo ante el Olympique (1-0) sufrió un tirón en el muslo, que lo mantuvo cuatro semanas en el dique seco. Fue candidato al FIFA World Player, quedando en tercer lugar tras Cristiano Ronaldo y Lionel Messi. En su regreso logró anotar ante el Preston North End (2-0); su primer tanto en la FA Cup. El 1 de febrero anotó otros dos tantos ante el Chelsea (2-0). The Times lo incluyó dentro de su lista de «los 50 mejores futbolistas del Liverpool», aunque llevara solamente un año y medio en el equipo.

Torres se enfrentó en Champions a sus otrora máximos rivales - el Real Madrid - el 10 y 16 de marzo. Lesionado en el tobillo, los médicos le administraron una inyección de calmantes a fin de que disputara la vuelta de la eliminatoria en su estadio. El encuentro - en el que anotó uno de los tantos de su equipo - terminó en 4-0, lo que unido al 0-1 de Madrid concedió el acceso de los cuartos de final al Liverpool. Cuatro días después anotó el tanto del empate en el encuentro que enfrentaba a Liverpool y Manchester United en Old Trafford y que concluyó con la victoria de los reds (1-4). En abril fue encuadrado dentro del once ideal de la Premier. El 24 de mayo marcó su tanto número cincuenta en ochenta y cuatro apariciones con el Liverpool ante el Tottenham, en el último encuentro de la temporada. Tras terminar la temporada renovó su contrato con el Liverpool; cerrándose el acuerdo el 14 de agosto. En este contrato se establece un sueldo semanal de 110.000 libras a la semana y la opción de extenderlo un año más después de que expire en 2013.

2009-2010

Comenzó el año anotando un tanto en el encuentro que enfrentó al Liverpool con el Stoke City (4-0), y una semana después ante el Aston Villa - aunque no evitó la victoria de los villanos (1-3). Volvería a marcar en las apretadas victorias del equipo ante el Bolton Wanderers (2-3) y el West Ham United (2-3). Una semana después marcó un hat-trick ante el Hull City al que los reds humillaron (6-1) en Anfield. En septiembre le nombraron «futbolista del mes» a causa de su espectacular arranque. El 25 de octubre anotaría un nuevo tanto en la victoria de su equipo (2-0) ante el Manchester United, y una semana después ante el Fulham, que derrotó a los reds (3-1). Marcó el décimo tanto del año en el encuentro ante el Wigan Athletic, que cayó derrotado en Anfield Road (2-1).

2010-2011

Luego de haber sido nombrado entrenador del Liverpool, Roy Hodgson dijo que Torres no sería vendido: "Torres no está a la venta y ninguna oferta es bienvenida. Queremos que se quede." Hodgson luego desmintió reportes de prensa que aseguraban que Torres iba a dejar al club. Torres luegó reafirmó su compromiso con el club, diciendo: "Mi compromiso y lealtad al club y a los aficionados es el mismo que cuando firmé por primera vez con el equipo."] Su primer partido de la temporada 2010-11 fue en el empate a 1-1 ante el Arsenal FC el 14 de agosto de 2010. Su primer gol de la temporada fue en la victoria por 1-0 sobre el West Bromwich Albion el 29 de agosto, el cual fue su gol #50 en Anfield en todas las competiciones. Torres también anotó el gol que le dio la victoria a su equipo por 2-1 sobre el Blackburn Rovers el 24 de octubre, el cual fue su primer gol desde agosto. Luego, Torres anotó un doblete en la victoria por 2-0 sobre el Chelsea FC el 7 de noviembre.

Chelsea FC

2010-2011

El 28 de enero de 2011, el Liverpool había rechazado una oferta del Chelsea FC por Torres, la cual se situaba entre los 35 y los 40 millones de libras esterlinas. Sin embargo, Torres le pidió al club que le dejaran marcharse, lo cual también fue rechazado. Luego, el Chelsea regresó con una nueva oferta, ahora de 50 millones de libras, la cual fue aceptada el 31 de enero de 2011, dándole a Torres permiso para negociar con el Chelsea. Ese mismo día, el Chelsea oficializó la contratación de Torres, quien firmó un contrato de 5 años y medio.
Su debut con el Chelsea fue el 6 de febrero de 2011 precisamente ante el Liverpool, disputando el encuentro como titular. En ese partido, el Liverpool se llevó la victoria por 1-0. Torres no anotaría su primer gol con el Chelsea sino hasta el 23 de abril de 2011 ante el West Ham United, en donde marcó el segundo gol de su equipo en la victoria por 3-0.

2011-2012

En la siguiente temporada, en medio de escrutinio luego de que declarara públicamente que sus compañeros de equipo eran «lentos», Torres se enfrentaría al Bayer Leverkusen en la Liga de Campeones el 14 de septiembre de 2011, en donde daría dos asistencias de gol a David Luiz y a Juan Mata para que el Chelsea se llevara la victoria por 2-0. Luego, en el siguiente encuentro frente al Manchester United cuatro días después, Torres volvería a anotar con el Chelsea, al haber descontado el marcador al minuto 46 en la derrota de su equipo por 3-1. En dicho encuentro, Torres tuvo la oportunidad de marcar un segundo tanto al minuto 83 que hubiera significado el 3-2 en ese momento, aunque terminó mandando el balón a un lado de la meta. Torres marcaría su tercer gol con el Chelsea en el siguiente partido de liga frente al Swansea City, al haber abierto el marcador al minuto 29 en la victoria de su equipo por 4-1,aunque diez minutos después obtuvo su primera tarjeta roja en la Premier debido a una fuerte falta que cometió sobre Mark Gower. Días después Torres conseguiria un doblete ante el KRC Genk en un encuentro de la Liga de Campeones de la UEFA.
El 24 de abril de 2012, en el partido de vuelta por la segunda semifinal de la Liga de Campeones contra el FC Barcelona, Torres ingresó por Didier Drogba en el 80'. Después de tener algunas oportunidades de intentar rematar al arco, en el 90+1', Torres cierra la clasificación del Chelsea al anotar el 2-2 (3-2 en el global a favor del Chelsea): Tras recibir un pase de José Bosingwa desde la mitad del campo del Chelsea, con toda la defensa azulgrana adelantada, el Niño se quedó mano a mano con Víctor Valdés, al que dribló con un amague y remató tranquilamente. Así el Chelsea eliminó al Barcelona y se clasificó a la final de la UEFA Champions League 2011/12.117 118 119 Pocos días después confirma su recuperación al anotar un "hat-trick" frente al Queens Park Rangers en la goleada de su equipo (6-1).120 El 5 de mayo de 2012 consigue su primer título a nivel de clubes (la FA Cup).
El 19 de mayo de 2012, en la final de la Liga de Campeones de la UEFA 2011-2012, en la que el Chelsea se enfrentaba al Bayern de Múnich , un minuto después de que el alemán Thomas Müller anotara el 1-0 parcial en el 83', Torres ingresa por Salomon Kalou. Unos minutos después, el Niño provoca un córner, el que termina en gol de Didier Drogba (y provoca el alargue, y posterior tanda de penaltis). En los penales, el Chelsea derrota al Bayern por 4-3 y el Chelsea, y Torres ganan su primera Liga de Campeones.

2012-2013

Torres inició la temporada 2012/13 en la Community Shield 2012, en donde el Chelsea se enfrentaba al Manchester City en el Villa Park.124 El Niño anotó el primer gol del encuentro, pero el Chelsea terminó perdiendo por 3-2 ante el Manchester City (con goles de Yaya Touré, Carlos Tévez y Samir Nasri para los Citizens, y Ryan Bertrand para los Blues). El 22 de agosto de 2012 Torres marca su primer gol en la Premier League 2012/13 en la victoria por 4-2 ante el Reading (en una fecha adelantada, debido a la participación del Chelsea en la Supercopa de Europa), y en la siguiente jornada, el Chelsea le gana al Newcastle United por 2-0, con Torres participando en los dos goles que le dieron la victoria a los londinenses: primero, ocasionando un penal que luego transformaría en gol el belga Eden Hazard, y después convirtiendo un golazo tras una magnífica combinación con el mismo Hazard. También convirtió en las siguientes fechas, en las victorias por 2-1 y 4-1 ante el Arsenal y el Norwich City, respectivamente. Tras este gran comienzo liguero, el Niño sufrió un traspié al recibir su segunda expulsión en Premier League (esta vez por doble amarilla), esta vez ante el Manchester United que le remontó un 2-0 al Chelsea y los Red Devils ganaron 2-3 (a la expulsión de Torres, se le sumó la de su compañero Branislav Ivanović).

El 7 de noviembre de 2012, Torres convierte su primer gol en la UEFA Champions League 2012/13, contra el Shaktar Donetsk ucraniano en la victoria por 3–2 del Chelsea, cuando el meta ucraniano Andriy Pyatov realizó un mal despeje que rebotó en el Niño e ingresó en su portería, convirtiendo así el primer gol del encuentro. Dos semanas después, el 21 de noviembre, el director técnico blue Roberto Di Matteo es despedido y reemplazado por el español Rafael Benítez, que había dirigido a Fernando Torres en el Liverpool. Una de las principales misiones de Benítez era hacer que Torres volviera a su mejor forma. El 5 de diciembre Torres le anota un doblete al FC Nordsjælland danés en el triunfo 6–1 del Chelsea en la última jornada de la fase de grupos de la Champions, acabando así con una sequía goleadora de más de 12 horas de juego. El Chelsea terminó tercero en su grupo y se clasificó a los dieciseisavos de final de la Europa League 2012/13.

Luego, el 27 de enero de 2013, Torres anota el segundo gol en la igualdad 2–2 ante el Brentford de la Football League One por la Budweiser FA Cup, forzando el 'replay', en donde se clasificarían a los octavos de final.

El 14 de marzo de 2013, Torres convirtió el tercer gol en la victoria 3–1 en el partido de vuelta ante el Steaua de Bucarest por los octavos de final de la Europa League 2013/14, gol significó la clasificación de los Blues a cuartos de final. Sin embargo, el Niño sufrió una fractura de nariz terminando el partido tras recibir una patada del defensor polaco Łukasz Szukała, por lo que tuvo que usar una máscara protectora durante las siguientes semanas. En cuartos también fue protagonista, le metió 3 goles al Rubin Kazan en la eliminatoria, dos en casa y uno en Rusia. En semifinales no faltó tampoco a su cita con el gol marcó el inicio de la remontada del chelsea frente al Basilea. Y el 15 de mayo de 2013 gana la UEFA Europa League también con gol suyo (59') con una curiosa celebración a lo "Kiko" Narváez y así se convertiría en el único jugador junto a Juan Mata en ganar Mundial, Eurocopa, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League y UEFA Europa League a mismo tiempo.

2013-2014

El 22 de octubre de 2013, Torres convierte dos de los tres goles con que el Chelsea ganó por 3–0 al Schalke 04 en la tercera jornada de la Champions League 2013/14, siendo el cuarto doblete que anota el Niño en la Liga de Campeones. Luego, el 27 de octubre, el Niño Torres vuelve a ser figura del Chelsea, esta vez ante el Manchester City al asistir al alemán André Schürrle en el primer gol de los blues y convertir el gol de la victoria (y su primero en la Premier League 2013/14) por 2–1 del Chelsea sobre los citizens. El 11 de enero de 2014, Torres alcanza los 200 partidos en la Premier League marcando un gol en la victoria del Chelsea contra el Hull City.

El 22 de abril de 2014 en la ida de la semifinal de la Champions League, Torres vuelve después de siete años al estadio que le vio nacer, el Vicente Calderón y jugó contra su equipo de toda la vida, el Atletico de Madrid. Aunque el partido quedó 0-0, le hicieron una ovación al final del partido tanto los aficionados del Chelsea como los del Atletico de Madrid. A la semana siguiente, el 30 de abril, fue la vuelta de la semifinal de la Champions League y entonces el niño Torres, en la primera parte del partido, gracias a una jugada de Willian Borges da Silva, después un centro de Cesar Azpilicueta a Fernando Torres, consigue marcar al Atletico de Madrid, no celebra el gol por respeto a su equipo de la infancia y luego pidió perdón a la afición por ese mismo gol. Es el primer futbolista español en marcar en 3 semifinales distintas de Champions League: 2008 cuando era jugador del equipo inglés Liverpool y 2012 y 2014 siendo jugador del equipo también inglés Chelsea. Más adelante, en la segunda parte, el Chelsea comete una falta al Atlético de Madrid y entonces Diego Costa es el encargado de lanzar el penalti, Fernando Torres no puede mirar y por eso se da la vuelta. Al final del partido, Fernando Torres se da un abrazo con su antiguo compañero de equipo y el actual entrenador del Atlético de Madrid, Diego Simeone.

AC Milan

El 29 de agosto de 2014, Torres es cedido por dos temporadas al AC Milan.

Selección National

En 2001 se impuso en el «Torneo Algarve» con la selección sub-16 española. También vencieron en el campeonato europeo sub-16 de la UEFA (2001), en el que Torres anotó el único tanto de la final y fue elegido mejor jugador del campeonato. En noviembre de ese mismo año representó a España en el Mundial Sub-17 de 2001, en el que la selección fue eliminada en la fase de grupos. En 2002 se impuso en el europeo sub-19, en el que fue nombrado futbolista del torneo y de nuevo anotó el único tanto de la final.


Torres y el resto de internacionales celebrando la victoria en la Eurocopa 2008.El 6 de septiembre debutó con la selección nacional en un amistoso ante Portugal. El 28 de abril de 2004 anotó su primer tanto ante la selección italiana. En 2004 fue convocado a la Eurocopa de ese año. Tras salir desde el banquillo en los dos primeros encuentros, debutó como titular en el decisivo lance ante Portugal; en dicho encuentro - que terminó con la derrota del combinado nacional - el delantero madrileño estrelló un disparo en el poste.

En la fase de clasificación al Mundial de 2006 anotó siete tantos en once encuentros, convirtiéndose en el máximo anotador español de dicha fase; entre ellos, anotó un tanto vital ante Bélgica y un hat-trick ante San Marino.[1] En su primera aparición en un mundial - en el Mundial de Alemania (2006) - marcó un tanto de volea ante Ucrania (4-0). En el encuentro ante Túnez anotó los dos tanto que dieron la victoria al combinado nacional (2-1). Él y David Villa se convirtieron en los máximos anotadores españoles con tres tantos.

Fue convocado con España a la Eurocopa de 2008. Debutó en la victoria de España ante Rusia, donde Villa le dedicó un tanto (4-1). Fue duramente criticado, ya que, tras ser sutituido, aparentemente rechazó estrechar la mano al seleccionador nacional Luis Aragonés. Posteriormente afirmó que en realidad no estaba enfadado con Aragonés, sino consigo mismo. Anotó su primer tanto de la competición en la victoria del combinado español ante Suecia (2-1). Marcó el único tanto de la final contra Alemania (1-0), y fue nombrado hombre del encuentro. Tras la victoria afirmó: «Es un sueño hecho realidad. Es mi primer título y espero que sea el primero de muchos. Una victoria en la Eurocopa, vale casi como un título mundial. Solíamos ver las finales en televisión, pero hoy hemos estado aquí y hemos ganado. Mi trabajo es marcar goles. Quiero marcar más goles y ser el futbolista más importante de Europa y del mundo.» Él y Villa fueron elegidos como los dos delanteros del once ideal de la Eurocopa.

El 28 de marzo de 2009 disputó ante Turquía su encuentro número sesenta con la selección - durante la fase de clasificación para el Mundial de 2010 - convirtiéndose en el futbolista más joven en lograr este hito. Aunque las lesiones marcaron la temporada impidiéndole disputar un considerable número de encuentros clasificatorios, anotó en un amistoso ante Chile tras sustituir a Villa en la segunda mitad. En verano Vicente Del Bosque le convocó para disputar la ConfeCup. Durante la disputa de esta competición anotó su segundo hat-trick con España ante el combinado neozelandés; el hat-trick más rápido de la historia de la selección. También disputó el encuentro de semifinales ante Estados Unidos - en el que el combinado nacional fue derrotado (2-0), - así como el encuentro ante Sudáfrica - en el que los españoles se impusieron (3-2) en el tiempo de descuento.

En el Mundial de Sudáfrica reapareció tras una larga lesión. Pese a las espectativas creadas en torno a su figura no logró cuajar un buen mundial, desentonado con el resto del equipo, y sin marcar un solo gol. En la semifinal ante Alemania perdió la titularidad en detrimento de Pedro(que ya participara en el gol ante Paraguay en cuartos de final nada más sustituir al delantero madrileño), y empezó también en el banco la final, saliendo en los últimos minutos, en los que sufrió una nueva lesión.

El 21 de mayo de 2012 se anuncia su convocatoria con España para la Eurocopa 2012. Ganó su segunda Eurocopa tras la victoria de la selección española en la final ante Italia por 4-0, y Torres fue el máximo goleador del torneo.
Torres se encuentra en tercer lugar entre los máximos goleadores de la selección española.

El domingo día 26 de Mayo de 2014, Vicente del Bosque no dio la lista definitiva de los jugadores que irían a Brasil pero si dio la lista de 19 jugadores que jugaran un partido amistoso este viernes 30 de Mayo de ese mismo año a las 10 de la noche en el canal cuatro. En esta lista de 19 jugadores no hay ningún jugador ni del Atlético de Madrid ni del Real Madrid habiendo jugado el día anterior, el sábado 25 de Mayo la Champions League. Al terminar el partido que acabo de nombrar, muchos jugadores que Vicente del Bosque había convocado en la pre lista de 30 jugadores acabaron tocados véase el ejemplo del futbolista hispano brasileño Diego Costa, que se tuvo que retirar a los diez minutos de haber comenzado el encuentro. El delantero madrileño Fernando Torres junto a un compañero de la selección, el centrocampista vasco Ander Iturraspe hicieron de modelos presentando la nueva equipacion que la selección española llevara en el Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2014. El lunes día 2 de mayo del 2014, Vicente del Bosque dará la lista definitiva de los 23 futbolistas que irán Copa Mundial de Fútbol de 2014, en ella puede llegar a estar Fernando Torres o no, una de las cosas por las cuales depende de si es definitivo que vaya, es el partido amistoso que se llevara a cabo como bien se ha dicho antes, este viernes 30 de mayo a las 10.

El partido celebrado en Sevilla, en el estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán albergo el partido amistoso entre España y Bolivia. En la 2.ª parte del partido, en el min. 49 de partido, el número 3 de Bolivia, Marvin Bejarano empuja al zaguero navarro Javi Martínez dentro del área, entonces el árbitro pita penalti. El delantero madrileño y actual jugador del Chelsea Football Club de Premier League de Inglaterra, Fernando Torres es el encargado de tirar el penalti, con un gol a lo panenka consigue meter el 1-0 y poner por delante a España en el marcador. Llevaba 11 meses sin ser convocado con la selección española, el periodo más largo desde que debutó con la absoluta el 6 de septiembre en un partido amistoso contra Portugal. Torres no marcaba un gol de penalti con la selección española desde el 19 de junio de 2006 cuando se ganó a Túnez en la fase de grupos del Mundial de Alemania, 4 de los 37 goles de sus 107 partidos que ha metido con la Selección han sido en la segunda parte. El sábado 31 de mayo a la 13:00, Vicente del Bosque da la lista definitiva para Brasil 2014 y el delantero del Chelsea es uno de los cuatro delanteros, junto al delantero hispano brasileño del Atlético de Madrid, Diego Costa, el delantero del Barcelona Pedro Rodríguez y el delantero asturiano del Atlético de Madrid, David Villa.
